POSITION DESCRIPTION

Job Title: Occupational Therapist

PRN, SCHEDULE VARIES

Job Summary: Evaluates, plans and administers occupational therapy modalities/regimens for the purpose of developing and restoring function through rehabilitative occupational therapy as prescribed by a physician. Provides supervision of occupational therapist assistants.

Demonstrates Competency in the Following Areas:

Performs accurate and comprehensive assessments.

Accurately completes OASIS data sets.

Obtains physician orders for certification and recertification of occupational therapy services.

Ensures that changes in patients’ clinical status are communicated to other healthcare team members and office staff verbally and in writing in a timely manner.

Ensures that assessment results, recommendations, and physician orders are communicated to other healthcare team members and staff in a timely, accurate and thorough manner.

Coordinates care planning and delivery with the physician and other healthcare team members and staff to facilitate optimal patient outcomes.

Delivers occupational therapy modalities appropriate to the patient’s clinical status and needs, and in accordance with the standard of care for patient’s age and with applicable laws, regulations and standards.

Assesses the efficiency and effectiveness of occupational therapy services and designs and implements processes to support optimal patient outcomes.

Develops appropriate home exercise programs tailored to the patient’s clinical status, needs and age.

Able to appropriately assess and reassess a patient’s pain.

Utilizes appropriate pain management modalities that include, but are not limited to, occupational therapy modalities.

Educates the patient and/or family in effective pain management modalities.

Provides occupational therapy modalities in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.

Supports and maintains a culture of safety and quality.

Performs transfer and discharge planning functions in accordance with policy and applicable laws, regulations and standards.

Addresses and supports cultural practices providing such practices do not harm the patient or others, and do not interfere with the planned course of occupational therapy.

Participates in the organization’s information management program.

Adheres to all applicable laws, regulations and standards.

Provides appropriate supervision of OT assistants.

Completes and submits necessary documentation in accordance with policy and applicable regulations.

Submits verification of completed visits in accordance with policy.

Participates in interdisciplinary team conferences in accordance with policy.

Maintains current knowledge of community resources. Identifies and accesses appropriate external and internal resources to meet patient and/or family needs and to facilitate optimal patient outcomes while services are being provided, and for transfer and discharge processes.

Professional Requirements:

Adheres to dress code; appearance is neat and clean.

Adheres to legal practice standards, including applicable federal, state, and local regulations and standards.

Completes annual education requirements.

Maintains patient confidentiality at all times.

Demonstrates effective time management and organizational skills; provides patient visits as scheduled; completes patient care within the designated time.

Wears identification while providing patient care.

Attends annual review and inservices, as scheduled.

Attends 12 staff meetings annually, or reads and returns all staff meeting minutes.

Articulates grievance/concerns procedure.

Articulates adverse event/incident reporting procedure.

Articulates organization’s emergency management plan.

Maintains currency of professional knowledge by participating in continuing education offerings.

Assures continued competency by maintaining and updating professional performance, knowledge and skills.

Participates in the organization’s performance improvement and continuous quality improvement (CQI) activities.

Practices in a manner consistent with the professional and code of ethics.

Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner.

Complies with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices.

Communicates the mission, ethics and goals of the organization.

Requirements:

Regulatory Requirements :

· Licensed or otherwise regulated, if applicable, as an occupational therapist by the state in which practicing, unless licensure does not apply;

· Graduated after successful completion of an occupational therapist education program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) of the American Occupational Therapy Association, Inc. (AOTA), or successor organizations of ACOTE; and

· Is eligible to take, or has successfully completed the entry-level certification examination for occupational therapists developed and administered by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy, Inc. (NBCOT).

· On or before December 31, 2009:

· Licensed or otherwise regulated, if applicable, as an occupational therapist by the state in which practicing; or

· When licensure or other regulation does not apply:

· Graduated after successful completion of an occupational therapist education program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) of the American Occupational Therapy Association, Inc. (AOTA) or successor organizations of ACOTE; and

· Is eligible to take, or has successfully completed the entry-level certification examination for occupational therapists developed and administered by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy, Inc., (NBCOT).

· On or before January 1, 2008:

· Graduated after successful completion of an occupational therapy program accredited jointly by the Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation of the American Medical Association and the American Occupational Therapy Association; or

· Is eligible for the National Registration Examination of the American Occupational Therapy Association or the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy.

· On or before December 31, 1977:

· Has had two (2) years of appropriate experience as an occupational therapist; and

· Has achieved a satisfactory grade on an occupational therapist proficiency examination conducted, approved, or sponsored by the U.S. Public Health Service.

· If educated outside the United States, must meet both of the following:

· Graduated after successful completion of an occupational therapist education program accredited as substantially equivalent to occupational therapist entry level education in the United States by one of the following:

n The Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE).

n Successor organizations of ACOTE.

n The World Federation of Occupational Therapists.

n A credentialing body approved by the American Occupational Therapy Association.

· Successfully completed the entry level certification examination for occupational therapists developed and administered by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy, Inc. (NBCOT).

· On or before December 31, 2009:

· Licensed or otherwise regulated, if applicable, as an occupational therapist by the state in which practicing.

· Two (2) years of work experience.

· Current BLS certification.

Language Skills:

· Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.

· Additional language proficiency an asset.

Skills:

· Knowledge of general occupational therapy modalities and scope of occupational therapy practice within the state of Arkansas.

· Flexible, yet organized, with ability to exercise sound judgment.

Physical Demands:

· Ability to lift/transfer patients and equipment. Frequent and prolonged bending, stooping, couching, walking, and standing. Ability to communicate.

· This position is a safety sensitive position pursuant to Amendment 98 to the Arkansas Constitution § 2(25). A safety sensitive position means any position in which a person performing the position while under the influence of marijuana may constitute a threat to health or safety.
