A summer undergraduate level intern will be working within the Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping at the University of New Hampshire Durham. Position will entail processing archived multibeam data for the Joint Hydrographic Center (JHC) task 34-Spatial Data Technology task. Processing may include review of existing projects already incorporated at 400m resolution, to export and edit data to ensure grids to meet 100 m resolution requirements. Position may include work with GIS, Excel and geospatial metadata, as well as specialized seafloor mapping software for the processing of multibeam echosounder data (i.e. CARIS/ Qimera/MB System etc.) Intern is expected to have had existing training on processing multibeam data, and background course work in marine geology mapping to allow for prompt start to assisting with data processing when given detailed procedures and close supervision and directions. This position is not considered essential staff, i.e. one is not required to come to campus during curtailment (i.e. during a snow storm). Duties/Responsibilities: 75% of the processing of sonar data in sonar processing software, filling out metadata, basic data management tasks, basic GIS visualization of data to review what you have processed. 25% Basic GIS Map Tasks, helping search for data, Task Write Up\ Tracking Progress in Spreadsheets, etc. Minimum Acceptable Education & Experience: High School Diploma or equivalent is required. Additional course work and familiarity with geology\ oceanography\marine science\ GIS including basic familiarity with scientific method equivalent to that taught in introductory science courses at undergraduate level is desired. Relevant course work or other experience in oceanography marine science pertinent to seafloor mapping. For example, undergraduate level or equivalent experience that includes introduction to basic topics of seafloor mapping\marine science\marine geology. Pertinent experience might include previous independent study/ research project/ internship/ course module, portion of broader course rather than one only focused on sea floor mapping. Training in how to use at least one standard software for cleaning multibeam sonar data such as CARIS and or Qimera/MB System, and/ or experience cleaning at least on data set in said software. Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Familiarity with GIS software, could be through a course in GIS, or other experience about how GIS works and how to do basic tasks such as visualize data, change symbology/colors, concepts such as scale, etc. Preferred Qualifications: Additional existing course work in marine geology/geology/oceanography. Exposure to why one uses programing/scripts even if one has not used scripting or taken statistics/ data analysis yet. Experience with geology/marine science/oceanographic research, such as through a course work resulting in presentations, posters, reports. Experience doing analysis, reading, and writing up original research, such as for a course research project or assisting with someone else’s research project.
