POSITION DESCRIPTION

Montclair State University invites applications for a temporary Associate or Full Professor specializing in Harm Reduction. The successful candidate will hold a concurrent appointment as Director of the Center for Harm Reduction, a research-focused initiative serving as a statewide hub for research, education, and policy development addressing harm reduction strategies and substance use disorders. The Director will have expertise in harm reduction and community-based public health research responsible for shaping the Center’s vision, securing external funding, leading research initiatives, and fostering collaborations with policymakers, community organizations, and other stakeholders. This temporary, full-time, 12-month faculty position seeks candidates with demonstrated excellence in scholarship, teaching, research, community engagement, and leadership. Primary responsibilities emphasize faculty research and teaching, complemented by administrative leadership of the Center. Major responsibilities include: Teaching one course per semester during the academic year Develop and implement the Center’s strategic plan in alignment with the University’s mission. Establish partnerships with academic institutions, government agencies, and community-based organizations to advance harm reduction efforts. Lead and oversee interdisciplinary research projects focused on harm reduction, substance use disorder treatment, and related public health issues. Securing and managing external funding from state, federal, and private sources to support and expand research initiatives. Collaborating with policymakers, academic institutions, and community organizations to translate research into actionable policy recommendations. Developing and disseminating policy briefs, evaluation frameworks, and evidence-based recommendations to state and federal stakeholders. Overseeing and managing the Center’s strategic vision, daily operations, budget, staffing, and compliance with university and grant requirements. Supervising and mentoring research staff, faculty affiliates, and program coordinators. Enhancing existing university harm reduction initiatives, including the Harm Reduction Certificate program and workforce training modules. Perform other duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS

REQUIRED:

Ph.D., DrPH, MD, or equivalent in Public Health, Medicine, Psychology, Sociology, or a related field. A minimum of five years of professional experience demonstrating expertise in harm reduction, substance use disorder research, or related areas. Proven track record of securing external funding from government agencies, private foundations, or other sources. Experience leading large-scale research initiatives within an academic or research institution. Strong leadership, strategic planning, and organizational management skills. Ability to engage with diverse stakeholders, including policymakers, community organizations, and academic researchers.

PREFERRED:

Experience working in a university similar setting. Prior involvement in policy development and advocacy related to harm reduction. Knowledge of funding mechanisms related to public health, addiction treatment, and harm reduction efforts. STARTING DATE August 29, 2025
